The Burke Residence from Matthew O. Daby Designs at Modern Green Home, the redesign stays within the existing footprint other than a small addition for the entry which was redesigned to make a strong announcement when approaching the house-that sits a full story below the front road. To accommodate the Burke’s growing family, the new green home is divided into two zones. The all wood, partially open riser, staircase (a design collaboration with Adam Burke) visually and literally links the main and lower level. A wall of windows was added to bring the site’s large trees and sky into the home design. Uninhibited use of douglas fir, cherry, and cedar wood throughout introduces a warm, comfortable feeling to the modern home design.

The Modern Green Home Retreat: Small and Simple Design – NYT has tigerwood flooring certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, a water-conserving toilet, and an on-demand water heater. Modern Green Home Retreat Greener, Happier. Architects Paul McKean and Amy Donohue tackled The Complexities of Keeping It Small and Simple when they built a weekend home design outside Portland, Oregon in the Hood River Valley. The Modern Green Home Retreat: Small and Simple Design itself had been on the market for three years and included a creek requiring a 100-foot buffer zone. The couple faced many obstacles (including a floodplain and deed restrictions on small homes) but still managed to build a modern, green home. A KEY concept for the Modern Green Home Retreat at Small and Simple Design was “to literally have no footprint,” Ms. Donohue said. The roof is engineered to sustain plants and soil to absorb rainwater. NYT.
