Modern Douglass House by Group 41 Architects

By matalangit On January 11th, 2010

This additional modern architecture details were added to bring the modern house into the 21st century. Modern Douglass House project involves a modern house and a derelict barn which sits behind the main house on a lovely site in Eureka Valley. Group 41 was retained to assist the owners in the extremely complicated Planning approvals process to legalize the barn as a single family dwelling. The design of the barn incorporates wide plank flooring and sliding doors reminiscent of barn design, as well as the board and batten siding and windows that reflect the exact style of the original structure as required by the Planning Commission. This front house, badly converted to two units many years ago was reconverted to a gracious single family home, reviving its original Edwardian character with elegant detailing, and retaining some of the original elements.

Modern Coulter House in Medfield, MA

By matalangit On December 10th, 2009

This Modern Coulter House in Medfield, MA addition above an existing structure expands the experience of the house without physically making it bigger. The modern interior ‘ness’ of the existing stone ground level is juxtaposed against the ‘exterior-ness’ of the new second level: The light-weight and light-filled spaces of the new second floor are separated into 3 separate pavilions. This modern home design fragmentation allows framed views to the surrounding landscape and new captured roof-gardens that both connect and separate the rooms.

Full-Size Modern Lego House from James May

By matalangit On November 29th, 2009

Toy storeys: James May and 1,000 helpers built the 20ft-tall Lego house on a wine estate in Surrey. Lego has also banned May from dismantling the structure and giving away the bricks, which the company donated for his forthcoming BBC show James May’s Toy Stories. May slept in the modern house on Friday night, on ‘the most uncomfortable bed I’ve ever slept in’ – when he also discovered the house was not waterproof. May believes that an art gallery, a children’s home or a wealthy private collector might be interested in the house. Knocking it down is just wrong on every level. It’s a really lovely thing – it would break the hearts of the 1,000 people who worked like dogs to build it.via.

Modern Khosla House Designed by Arthur Erickson in Portola Valley, California, USA

By matalangit On November 27th, 2009

Modern Khosla House Designed by Arthur Erickson crowning a 15-acre wooded site west of Palo Alto, California, the 14,000 square foot house extends from a hilltop in four directions, making it inseparable from the surrounding native landscape. The home of an extensive modern home design automation system reflects the client’s forward looking interest in developing computer-controlled products for home use. The pools are lined with a light green slate. A formal theme of four round columns and a capital is an abstract interpretation of a traditional motif found in the architecture of India, the owner’s original home. A unique system of cable trays and cabinets in each room enables the owner to modify the wiring and components as new products become available. The concrete frame is buff coloured and sandblasted, while exposed concrete walls are bush-hammered.
